Here is a picture of the central square in Ayamonte, Spain; November 19, 2000. This was a town along the way in trying to get to Portugal. It seemed almost impossible to get to Portugal, at the time, as there were no trains connecting border cities. We had to take a ferry from this town after taking a bus from another nearby town. It was quite the adventure: we caught the last ferry, braved a torrential downpour by foot trying to get to the train station, and caught the last train to Lisbon. All-the-while, I was sick with one of the worst colds I have had. To make matters worse, everyone on the train smoked and decided they'd want to stay up and talk loudly the entire night....which meant I was sick, tired, and miserable. Portugal was worth it though.
